Final Reckoning

Purpose and Pace

This is the penultimate chapter. The party proves what happened to Elias, identifies his surviving brother Konrad Falkenrath (who used the purchasing alias Martin Krell), and discovers his next intended murder. Konrad’s immediate objective is another targeted murder. The poisonings already committed were cover for his vengeance; the next intended victim is a living Order member.

1. The Suppressed Inquiry

Read aloud: The archive clerk sets a thin packet beneath the lamplight. Its cover has been scraped almost clean, yet one name remains: Elias. The seal below it bears the authority of Canon Severin Kessler. Across the margin, a second hand has written: Restricted by the Sacred Vigil.

Elias discovered a document contradicting a central teaching of the established faith. The secret Order of the Sacred Vigil suppressed it. Kessler arranged Elias’s imprisonment, torture and execution. Matthias Veyr and Brother Aldren belonged to the network. Elias’s brother Konrad Falkenrath subsequently captured Kessler, tortured him for other names, killed him and took his signet. He used that ring to pay the Black Briars. He stole or copied Magister Oren Vahl’s toxin research and poisoned public wells, causing civilian deaths while pursuing revenge. Konrad deliberately poisoned Veyr through Vauclerc’s contaminated water and personally poisoned Aldren in Stahlburg. The methods can differ in concentration or delivery while both remain intentional poison murders. Neither Vahl nor the Ashen Rector orchestrated the plague.

2. Three Ways to Learn the Truth

Route

What players discover

What it enables

Archive and transfer papers

Kessler ordered Elias detained; sealed death record or witness corroborates his death.

Establish the Order’s crime.

Archivist Hedda Maren

Elias’s brother sought answers and was turned away; she retained a family petition.

Identify Konrad Falkenrath.

Apothecary and carrier trail

Greta Heller’s buyer Martin Krell, Emil Rausch’s transport records, and other witnesses can be matched to Konrad.

Link Konrad to the poison and his movements.

The Kessler signet, if recovered from the Black Briars, is corroborating evidence, never a mandatory clue. Two independent lines of evidence should suffice; do not force the players through all three scenes.

3. The Last Name on Kessler’s List

A partial list obtained from Kessler’s confiscated effects, an Order index, or a witness identifies Provost Emeric Seld, a surviving member of the Sacred Vigil. Seld participated in concealing Elias’s execution. He is presently lodging at the Old Tollhouse on the road outside Stahlburg, where he intends to meet a confidential courier and leave the region before questions reach him. Seld is neither Prelate Rott nor a representative of the entire faith.

A recent stolen courier message or intercepted note makes clear that Konrad has discovered Seld’s whereabouts. One fragment reads: He leaves before dawn. The tollhouse. No more names will escape me. The players now know a person, a place and a narrow time window. Konrad intends to murder Seld; he is not headed to a waterworks to launch another plague.

4. Following Konrad to the Tollhouse

Paper trail: A copy of Seld’s travel pass or lodging order gives the tollhouse location.

Witness route: A stablehand confirms Seld’s carriage is being prepared at the Old Tollhouse and that a traveler resembling Martin Krell asked about its departure time.

Konrad’s preparations: An abandoned room contains a sketch of the tollhouse entrances and a notation of Seld’s departure.

Order activity: Armed strangers have been seen watching the same road, foreshadowing the secret Order’s attempt to silence all witnesses.

Any one route leads to the encounter. If the players delay, move the confrontation onto the nearby road or at Seld’s waiting carriage rather than letting the adventure end offstage.

5. What the Players Can Prepare

The players may warn or arrest Seld, approach Konrad, set an ambush of their own, or alert Prelate Anselm Rott. Rott is a genuinely decent, altruistic patron and not a member of the Sacred Vigil. If informed, he can offer trustworthy guards, witness protection, and a promise of a lawful inquiry; he cannot guarantee that the Order’s secret enforcers will obey him.

6. The Stakes

Konrad has a real grievance but has already killed innocent people through the poisonings. Seld has helped conceal an atrocity and may bargain to save himself. The Order’s enforcers want the evidence destroyed and both Konrad and the investigators silenced; if Seld has become a liability, they may kill him too. No side’s violence should be excused automatically.

7. The Old Tollhouse — End of Chapter

Read aloud: The old tollhouse stands beside a narrow road lined with bare trees. A carriage waits in the yard, its horses already harnessed. One upstairs window glows behind a shutter. Beyond the stone wall, a solitary figure moves through the darkness toward the rear door. Then, farther down the road, comes the muffled sound of several riders approaching.

End as the characters choose how to intervene. The next chapter begins with Konrad moving against Provost Seld, and the Order’s armed strike team closing in. Do not resolve the confrontation before the players act.

← Previous: Following the TrailHomeNext: Final Reckoning →

Adventure Index GM ONLY: Background (spoilers)IntroductionGM ONLY: Synopsis (spoilers)1.
