We can play games with people anywhere through Roll20, Discord, and other services. Tabletop games give you something that is hard tto replace.

For me, it comes down experiences and a shared creativity that happens when like-minded people share a story.

When everyone is sitting around the same beat-up table or joining through a slick voice chat service, rolling dice, the maps, or the game system, they aren’t the point anymore. It’s getting people together to enjoy time together and letting a story happen to them.

A movie or a book can tell a good story. In fact, a lot of my games as GM reflected the movies, shows and books I loved at the time. It just hits differently being part of the plot. You decisions matter. You decide to avoid the dark alley alone when there is a big bad thingy out there somewhere. Or, maybe you don’t avoid it and you deal with the consequences, and see where they take the group. Sometimes that’s great story. Sometimes it’s complete mess. Either way, it belongs to the players.

RPGs have changed the way I consume media. I pay more attention to story now and if it makes sense or not, whether its characters feel like real people, and whether the world follows or breaks its own rules. It makes it hard to ignore obvious moments where the writers expect you to just accept the schlock they’re putting down. Like time travel. C’mon!

Probably that’s a downside. Sometimes you’e supposed to just enjoy something and without thinking too hard about it. But tabletop games gave me an appreciation for good storytelling. Because I know how hard it can be to keep a story moving while still making the characters, choices, and consequences feel real.

What I miss most, though, is the regular game night.

There was something really exciting about making plans to be at a friend’s house at a certain time for a few (sometimes WAY more than a few) hours. Everyone showed up because they wanted to be there. You chased rabbits with your friends, ate snacks, joked around, re-capped the last session, argued about plans, and then spent the evening trying to survive whatever the game master had planned.

That kind of time together is harder to come by as an adult. People are always connected, but it’s just not the same anymore. A group chat can ping all day without. It gives you a false sense of reality, like you’re staying close to people, but really never focusing on the people in it. For game night that was a requirement. It was THE reason to put other things aside and just enjoy escaping reality, if only for a while.

Nostalgia? Maybe? I find now that I’m older, I’ve come to realize that free time is a precious commodity and that pulls hard on the old memory strings. Friendships used to seem effortless. Maintaining new ones today feels like work. Maybe it’s because there’re fewer and fewer people I have things in common with, or maybe people just suck now. It’s probably both.

Either way, I appreciate those old game nights more now than I did at the time… I took a lot for granted back then. Looking back, RPG’s were a way of staying connected to people I cared about.

The biggest regret I have is not realizing sooner how special those ordinary nights were.

The good thing is that tabletop games are still here. The tools may be different, but the reason to play has never changed. RPGs are the reason to get a few friends together and spend a few hours sharing a story.

It’s funny that tabletop role-playing games still feel relevant in a world where technology can, fairly literally, create worlds.
